What is a compulsive liar? What is the difference between an everyday hypocrite? Perhaps something to consider first is our own lying. Do not deny it, YOU are also guilty of lying. I lie, we are all guilty of this at some point - however, we really try not to, and struggle with lying when we need to. So if you think you are as a rule straightforward, what's a compulsive liar in comparison? Well, the most observable thing is they lie to you frequently, as a habit, without the same thought processes we undergo if we ever bend the truth.

Before we start on the right way to detect a compulsive liar though, we also have to consider the discrepancy between a compulsive liar and a pathological liar as these two types are not the same however people usually use them without differentiation. In a nutshell though:

Compulsive liars will fib for no personal gain but they do it habitually. It is a learned reaction to questions they've developed nevertheless they do understand they're lying and are generally conscious of the negative effects of the lies, they just find it hard to stop. Sometimes this is a sign of anxiety and depleted self worth, so they tell lies to shield or promote them self.

Pathological lying is a little bit different in that the liar cares little that they are being dishonest and will lie to you for some sort of personal gain. They are reminiscent of a sociopath in many respects and do not mind who they damage as long as their deceit gets them what they want. To spot a liar who is pathological is very tough!

So with this being said, just how do you detect a compulsive liar, and what do you do after?

People who are so accustomed to being dishonest has the unfortunate aptitude to be able to hinder letting slip many signs of deceit. This can be either a trained effect to not reveal some cues to dishonesty, but more frighteningly it can be because they start to believe their own falsehood. This means they're much harder to catch in a conversation from observation, but not impossible. You can find a number of things that compulsive liars do that may be detected from observing them for a short time, but more over time such as:

Too Much Detail - Compulsive liars will not just lie, they often lie BIG with many particulars.

Talking Themselves Up - Many compulsive liars wish to increase their self esteem and will lie to make their life look very good. This is now almost a plague on facebook where users post only their best images and update their status all the time saying how wonderful their life is

Seeking Attention - Some liars will make up stories about how bad life is for them. This really is very different and is more of an attention seeking tactic to get sympathy from you, or at least put them at the center of attention.

Inconsistency - This really is the largest aspect in spotting a compulsive lair. In time their deceptions will start to clash with each other and they will show their falsehoods. Taking them to task on this might cause offense though and they will respond angrily and might continue to lie even more to cover up.

So there you have it, everyone lies - some use lies as a way to gain personal power - and some people can't stop lying. The latter is the compulsive liar and can be spotted, but some are not bad, but deserve our pity, be more troubled about the pathological liars however as they do not care how much hurt they cause to get their way.
